Automation for developers

Image
Automation for developers is one of the most effective ways to reduce repetitive work, minimize risk of human error, improve software quality, and lower delivery costs. Let's consider the actual coding activity out of scope, as AI is increasingly assisting with software development. Instead, let's focus on automating activities around the development lifecycle. A good starting point is configuring Git hooks on developers' workstations. These hooks can automatically execute lightweight quality checks before code is committed. Typical examples include code formatting (Prettier, Black), linting (ESLint, Pylint), unit tests (Jest, JUnit, PyTest), commit message validation, and secret detection (Gitleaks). The key is to keep these checks fast so they provide immediate feedback without slowing developers down. Once local validations are in place, you should focus on the CI/CD pipelines, which should start immediately after code is pushed to the repository. As a best practice, inc...

Invest in automation

Early investment in automation can save countless hours, reduce the workload on your best engineers, and save a significant amount of money. What kind of automation am I talking about? Everything from setting up development environments to automating payments is possible. But let’s focus on automation in software development. The DevOps way of working, supported by workflows and pipelines that automate routine operations such as builds, code quality checks and static analysis, test execution, deployments to different environments, post-deployment validations, and rollbacks, is the direction we should all be moving toward. Automation not only speeds up delivery, but also reduces human error, improves reliability, and allows teams to focus on solving real business problems instead of repetitive manual tasks. In future posts, I will elaborate more on different automated tasks and approaches that can benefit your team and development workflow.
